Tell me I am not the only one who experiences this: At certain points in life I feel like everything is needing replacement at the same time. I remember a few years back when within weeks our washer, dishwasher and oven had some issues. Then suddenly all your clothes are falling off – no more underwear or socks and all pants are ripped. Than all the random things you need in your daily life… Well, I am feeling like I have the all the things that need replacing issue right now. So, in order to work through priorities and thoughts here I figured let’s write a post and get some fun out of it.
Things that need replacing
- Bike – I mentioned that I had a flat and ended up walking 7km home. I need this bike to get anywhere now that we live so far from shops.
Priority Level: high | Easiness level to replace: oh so high. Sigh. Time frame: rather yesterday than tomorrow - Gym Shoes – these shoes were the first thing I bought online (the now husband made me do it). I didnt get much usage out of them as I quite volleyball shortly after. I got them out for the Zumba class and by the end they fell apart. I tried gluing them but no such luck.
Priority Level: medium | Easiness level to replace: middle will try to get some Asics again Time frame: needed by September when new Zumba starts - iPhone – my phone lens is scratched after a dropped it a couple of years ago. I wanted to replace it in 2023 but then my laptop broke and that was a priority. Then I was unemployed so it wasn’t feasible. But I really am hindered in doing my job so this needs to be done this year.
Priority Level: high | Easiness level to replace: easy | Time frame: I wait for new releases in September - Apple Watch – I don’t necessarily “need” to replace this but I feel I would get lots of value out of it. I am still using generation 3 and lots of features (sleep apnea, sleep phases, water proof, etc) are not included that would really help me. Maybe I can make this an incentive when I reach a milestone weight loss?
Priority Level: medium | Easiness level to replace: easy | Time frame: before the article expedition? - Sneakers – my sneakers are embarrassing. They are broken and dirty and even washing can’t really fix it. unfortunately I need to replace these white ones and at the same time time I realize I would really like to have some black ones. Sigh… I do have my older white ones that turned out to be a better (and cheaper) investment than the white ones I need to replace now. unfortunately they are not water proof. So maybe just stick with those, dump the other white ones and get black ones?
Priority Level: medium | Easiness level to replace: middle | Time frame: fall season so I dont get wet feet - Light pants – I used to own a pair of very light grey jeans which never really fit and now loosing bit of weight they were just not working anymore. So I donated them. However I realize I tend to wanting to wear those light grey pants a lot and I miss them in the wardrobe.
Priority Level: medium | Easiness level to replace: medium | Time frame: I guess whenever I find some. - Colorful jeans/pants – again with loosing a bit of weight my mint green jeans and my red pants and not fitting anymore. But I have such great outfit combos which I would love to keep wearing. I am trying to find a replacement but it’s so hard to get the exact color. Sigh.
Priority Level: high | Easiness level to replace: hard | Time frame: I want them now. But don’t want to spend money. D*** it. - Swimsuit – I own a fun red swimsuit which is more for looking hot at the pool but not really good for exercise swimming. I have one I use for that which is about 15 years old and looks like it. I would like to get a more sportive, bright colored swimsuit for swimming in the lake (and being visible when I drown).
Priority Level: low | Easiness level to replace: middle | Time frame: by next summer – looks like not much swimming this year with the constant rain.
What are you in need of replacing right now? Anything you would want from my list? Any suggestion on what to get first?

Do you need an entire new bike, or can you take yours in for a repair? New bikes are expensive. My husband used to ride, and he had a little kit on the back of the seat that he could use to change a flat, because they seem to happen a LOT.
Good luck replacing clothes – it’s hard when you want something specific and can’t find the color or fit anymore.
Well, I think this bike has done its time. I guess I could change the flat … even myself – but it has a lot of other issues too. It was a cheap bike (250€) to begin with and had it 12 years now. It was also purchased when I lived down town Berlin. Now I am using more gravel roads and not as many paved ones. So I think a new one is not a bad idea. I may keep the old bike and fix it to have a spare one when people come to visit or I take it back to the country home. Not sure yet. I went for test drives in a shop yesterday and have a favorite. Fingers crossed I can find a good deal.
As for the clothes I may have found a pair of mint jeans yesterday which I am going to oder right now as they are on sale. It is so hard to find the exact same color when it is not in season or style anymore. It sucks and happens to me oh so often.
“Being visible when I drown” – that is an enjoyable turn of phrase (please don’t drown).
YES, it seems like everything in the house breaks down at the same time, or everything on my face (eyes, teeth, etc.). Right now we’re moving my daughter so it’s money for the cargo van, money for a hotel to stay in while moving her, buying stuff FOR the apartment. It is endless!
HAHA “eyes, teeth…” Well I guess I shouldn’t love. Those things shouldn’t need replacing.
Moving can be so freaking expensive. I had to do it twice within 15 months. No fun. Hope everything goes well.
Yup! This happens to me too! Last year I had to get a new laptop and only three months later had to get a new phone and it was painful!!! This year, all my clothes are falling apart; I had to buy a new hoodie and now my socks all have holes, but I don’t want to just buy cheap ones to replace them, I want good quality ones but it is a pain to have to buy them when abroad! #firstworldproblems
Re your bike, you could probably just put knobby tires on your existing bike and still continue to use it. That could cost more like $50-$100 for two new tires depending on what you buy.
I guess I could. But I wasn’t never really happy with the bike as a lot of little things broke (cheap plastic) and my basket for shopping is really wobbly and all. I have been wanting a new bike for the past six years but always thought it still work so lets not. Maybe this was my permission slip. We’ll see. I most likely keep the old one and repair it. I’ll ask my parents if I can donate it to the country home and then maybe make an afternoon with dad in the work shop to repair it.
I guess it is firstworldproblems when you have to replace socks. Ha. but I get it. I’ve gotten socks for Christmas and they have holes after two wears. Why?
I cna imagine it’s gonig to be hard to replace you’re coloured jeans. I remember you had a few photos of you in them on your blog, so sad that they don’t fit, although I guess overall you are happy to have that problem. Well, only one of my everyday T-shorts I bought with me to Noosa does not have little holes in the front now, so I’m going to have to replace them before summer.
Yes those mint jeans wear such a fun color and I really came to love them. I am pondering if I might attempt in altering them if I can’t find a replacement. I have saved a ton of tutorial son Pinterest. On the other hand they unfortunately have a stain too so not sure all the effort is worth it.
If you need to replace something immediately because you need it is soso annoying. Good luck with you shorts.
It does feel like everything needs to be replaced at the same time, doesn’t it? I go through those periods, too. And I also get annoyed at HAVING to replace things – like getting new gym shoes every year and replacing my sandals when they wear out. Apparently, I am just annoyed at any shoe-related replacements, ha!
I think the bike is the biggest priority for you since you use yours so much! It will be worth it to have a reliable, well-made bike.
Yes… shoes. Also a pain Jeans. Or pants in general. Specially if you got a bigger booty it is so so hard. sigh.
Agreed the bike is a major priority. I may have ordered one an wait for delivery.
Isn’t that the truth? Why do all things need replacing at the same time? It’s usually when I decide to rein in the spending, and BOOM, all of a sudden things need to be replaced. At least not all of the things that you need to replace are HUGE expenses (except for the iPhone, watch and maybe bike, depending on what you’re hoping to get), but things add up!
THey definitely end up- My plan to not shop in August wasn’t all too successful. September is a birthday month around here so no saving either. October
We just replaced the whole kitchen! Lol and we are on a spending freeze (or, I am ) plus our France trip was a long trip and costs quite a bit…
Oh yes those things are speedy. But it’s something you can cherish for such a long time. Making memories is almost always an exception for a spending freeze.
