We coming to an end of the Winter Olympics. One of my favorite things to enjoy during winter. Another wonderful reason why February is easily among the top three month. During my anniversary trip we often are lucky enough that parts of the winter olympic falls in our vacation. I remember our honeymoon at the arctic circle having pizza party in bed while watching an ice hockey game – Finland vs. Canada. I love all the sports you are able to watch. And I will watch and have watched every single one. But if I have to choose and name top three bottom three these are my options.
Top 3 winter sports at the Winter Olympics
Ice Skating
This brings back memories watching ice skating with grandma. With mom. Back in the day when I started watching Olympics (1988 – I was 6) Katharina Witt was a super star. A German superstar from the GDR. She is still all over the tv these Olympics commenting the competitions. And then came Surya Bonaly. What a power house, what grace. And she did a backflip ages before Ilia Malinin did it. Back then it was not allowed she was disqualified. I loved it. While I am always drawn most to women’s single I will watch all competitions. This year we really enjoyed the pair skating – probably because they had 90s as a topic and it was fun to remember certain songs. And when I asked the husband what he liked the most he instantly said figure skating too. Yeah!
Free Style Skiing
No matter if it is moguls, ski cross or aerials. I love love love them all. I think my first surprise was when I saw moguls for the first time. So amazing to see. The flow and speed and sheer control. Back then I was still skiing myself and had come across one of these mogul pistes. Believe me when I say next time I was on the slopes I searched for mogul pistes. Then they added aerials. So crazy.
Snowboard
I first thought I cluster snow boarding in the free style skiing but you know what, nope. This deserves its own placement in the top three. Take a guess what I am enjoying most? Yes, aerials and jumps. During the last olympics we fell in love with snowboard cross. As the husband put it: It’s Mario carts on snow. he isn’t wrong. And we love it even more since the woman companion was won by German Daniela Maier. Yeah. d
Bottom 3 winter sports at the Winter Olympics
Finding bottom ones is really really hard. As I said I would watch all of the sports being competed as. And all the following ones I have watched. But I would opt to other option if they are shown.
Curling
This one is the one I am not a hundred percent sure about. It is somewhat interesting. Its quirky. And we actually gifted my dad a voucher to go do it. But it is also very longwinded and can get rather boring. Right now I am a little annoyed that there is nothing else besides curling. It’s like only curling is being broadcasted. But then these matches take forever. Yesterday I watched the gold medal one and it was really exciting.
Short Track Speed Skating
This might be the least favorite. I have watched once or twice and it’s definitely entertaining but also a bit rowdy and over very quickly before I could grasp what’s happening. I most likely pass on this one. However I dd watch a recap yesterday and it was exciting. So who knows. I might like it more if I spend more time understanding the rules.
Skeleton
Ok now this one I squeezed in and opted to remove Alpin skiing. I have watched it. But this is like a bad accident. It is hard to watch and I am not able to look away. These athletes are crazy and succidal. It’s not good for my mental health to watch this sport. Seriously. But if I happen to zap through and it’s on I will probably get stuck. As I said.. accident style.
Alpin Skiing
You guys… I switched it back. I just realized I have watched a few of the Skeleton runs but none of the Alpin Ski competitions. I think that tells you I really don’t like that. Which is weird since I used to do and be rather good in alpin skiing. But then watching a sport and doing a sport are two things, right? For some reason going downhill fast and maybe hitting some gates on the way is just not very compelling to me.
And here you have my top 3 bottom 3 Winter Olympics edition. Your turn: Favorite winter sport to watch? Favorite winter sport to do? Most boring sport of all times? Do you have a favorite athlete? Or coach? Would you go watch Winter Olympics live?
This is list #4 in my “Do a 50 lists blog project” from my 101 in 1001 days goal list.

I haven’t watched much of the winter Olympics at all. The Aussies seem to do best in the aerials, moguls and cross, so I’ve seen the repeats of those runs. Seeing the crashes is a bit sickening, though.
The crashes are tough.
And yes Aussies were pretty good in those competitions. Must have to do with the surfing gene…
I love skiing and figure skating! Watching Alysa Liu’s gold medal performance was so uplifting! My daughter and husband are fascinated by curling, so I have watched a fair bit of it… and I just don’t get it at all.
I’ve watched a bit of curling too. Still don’t understand all the rules but there is a similar game we play in the summer so I somewhat pretend to understand.
Did you watch the ice skating gala? That was so fun.
I was obsessed with Katarina Witt and Surya Bonaly. And pretty much all the skaters from that time. I’d say the figure skating events are still my favorites to watch. I also enjoy watching freestyle skiing and snowboarding. I like watching a little Curling, ice hockey, and speed skating. I guess my least favorites are the luges, bobsleds, and skeletons. Watching one or two runs is enough for me.
Haha the ice canal competitions is where Germany dominates and it’s the ones always being broadcasted here in Germany.
I can get behind all the sports if I am honest. At least every four years I am fascinated.
So happy you remember Katharina Witt and Surya Bonaly.
I didn’t watch as much Olympics coverage as previous years – I’m not sure why. I think I was just depressed after Ilia Malinin’s terrible free skate, lol.
Top 3: figure skating, snowboard, and downhill skiing. Bottom 3… probably curling, bobsled, and like cross-country skiing. It just looks uncomfortable, lol.
Look, the ice skaters are terrible. They just do jump after jump after jump with no artistry. I sound like a Russian bot right now, but figure skating has lost its mojo, imo. But I love snowboard, particularly half pipe and big air. And we spent longer than I should admit watching ski mountaineering. Don’t get me started on how boring curling is. I mean, there are exciting moments, but you have to wade through forever to get to them!
