I am back from the arctic adventure. I survived. I am dead. It was fun and it wasn’t. I still need to sort my thoughts and process everything. But for now some northern lights for you.

View from our first campsite. The lights were coming over the hill.

Dancing above our heads and making amazing shapes.

Like these bursts.

Later I learned, that you can smell Polar Lights. If the air is wet there will be no aurora. If it’s a dry cold the chance for aurora is big.
I also learned that in December and January the chances are that they are more colorful than in February and March.

Most these pictures were made on the first night. We had one subtle coloring in the sky the next day but never this spectacular again.
Feel free to drop me any questions. I have a few blogposts I have drafted in my head but maybe you want to know something else.
Also, see any figures or shapes in the northern lights above? What’s your favorite shot?

Tobia these photos are amazing! I especially love the 2nd one. Look forward to hearing the highs and lows of your trip whenever you get the chance.
Thanks Sam, I’ve a few Hugh’s and lows. It’s going to be a topic long during spring I fear.
I love that second one too.
I’m SO GLAD that you got to see them! Amazing! How did they look to the naked eye, vs. the camera?
I am so so happy too.
They first looked like streaks of white clouds when someone said these are northern lights. I was a bit disappointed but the they really started and mostly looked like the pictures. I only slightly increased the green so it pops a bit more . Definitely a difference to what I’ve seen in January in Berlin.
How interesting that you could smell the northern lights! Your photos are so amazing. I’m sure you could see so many shapes dancing around. I can see various birds, fairies, and angels. Spectacular!
They truely were spectacular. I am not sure I could smell them but on our last night I mentioned to the lady who was running the camping ground we had our base camp on that I am hoping for more northern lights. She closed one nostril with a finger took a deep breath and said no, not today. I tried it but for me it smelled cold not wet. I guess I was lacking experience and reference points.
How awesome is that?? I see a fairy in the third to last and a goose in the second to last. I can’t wait to hear about the entire trip!!
Oh let me check the fairy and goose…. YES i see them too. So cool.
You’ll hear all about it until you can’t see no more snow, HA!
I’m so glad you got to see the Northern Lights shining brightly. What an amazing experience. I can’t wait to hear about the whole experience.
It was so great. After a har day and on the first of the expedition. Unfortunately we never saw them this brightly again. But at least I did get to see them one night. Truly magical.
I am so glad you’re back and you survived! I have been thinking about you. These pictures are incredible. I’m looking forward to diving into your recaps!
The lights were such a magical experience. Would do again instantly for sure.
