Today is the first day of a long anticipated and much needed vacation. A home vacation it is. Did I leave work the way I wanted to. No. I had four more things on my to-do list I was not able to cross off. I am still pondering if I sit down four hours and get three of them done. Undecided yet. I am glad we have a breather because we are both done. I was especially nice (read grumpy and bitchy) last night to the husband. He has other issues but he is also not his best. So this will be good. However, staying at home also has some pitfalls. We are gonna see all the projects. All the clutter. All the should be doning that issues.
Our home vacation was always planned to also do some of these things. Because obviously we are not getting sh*t done during work weeks. And we wanted to use the terrace more. The thing is… I am home all day. So for me this is not really feeling like a vacation and more like an extended weekend.
Don’t get me wrong. I am looking forward too. Mainly because I am really tired and spent. And at the same time my brain is making a huge list of things I want to do, should do, need to be done.
So for my own sake I have decided to write it all down.
Non-Negotiable
- Sleep in as many days as possible
- Read a lot (two books maybe three?)
- Keep the exercise routine
Want-To-Dos during the Home Vacation
- Sew a skirt or maxi dress
- Rent a boat and cruise the river
- Go to the Mexican restaurant
- Playing golf maybe
- Spend time on the terrace – under a new sun umbrella
- First dip in the river – let’s hope nature is cooperating
- Create a few more quote cards
- Extend and take care of my terrace garden
- Have a little bike ride together.
Must Dos during the Home Vacation
- Cleaning all windows aka testing the window cleaning robot
- Plan our White Summer Party, lots of shopping and decision making
- Home projects I am not yet aware of mainly discussing, deciding and shopping (not looking forward to this)
- TIDY UP MY ROOM – yes, in capital letters because it is such a mess that I can not think anymore when being in it.
- Deep clean the bathrooms.
I’ll be asking the husband later today what he wants to do this week. And then I hope by end of next week we each got to do two things on the want-to-list and two things of the must-do-list. More is always a bonus but let’s start there.
Additionally I want to pledge to not use my phone. I mean, I’ll use it at times like learning Duolingo or maybe logging my reading and chatting with chat GPT if I am in a behavioral eating crisis. But I will stay of social media and not play phone games and such. So far I have used the phone today only a few minutes to add some books to Libby. I can’t do that from the laptop. And it’s 2:15pm now. Very proud so far.
Have you ever stayed at home for a vacation? Do you do day trips? Will you potter around? How to you plan your home vacation? Any more tips? What is the longest time you can go without your phone?

I LOVE being home for a little vacation. We did this last summer when both kids were at camp the same week and it was absolutely fabulous. I loved waking up at home, puttering around doing chores and such with lots of extra time. And everything stayed soooo clean! I couldn’t believe it.
Both kids are going to be away together this summer, too, and I can hardly wait. It was just such an unusual dynamic to be home as a couple ALONE together. Absolutely fabulous.
I bet it is. Being home without the kids catapults you back to the beginning of your relationship. No responsibilities, sleeping in, just being, being able to do things you wouldn’t want your kids to witness, eat stuff you never buy. Oh I can see lots of things here.
I am so happy it will happen for you again.
I hope you have a lovely at-home vacation! I think it sounds wonderful. I’m intrigued about your window cleaning robot – how does it work?
Thank you Michelle. The first two days of this vacation have been spent blogging, reading, snacking, sleeping.
I hope to test out the robot on Tuesday. Right now we have thunderstorms and I refuse to even think about window cleaning.
A home vacation sounds so dreamy! I love doing a mental health day here and there – it truly feels good to just putter around my house, reading and napping and catching up on blogs, without work looming over my head. I hope your home vacation is going well!
Well, we are puttering around a lot and everything takes more time than I would like. So the vacation part hasn’t really happened besides too much ice cream and snacks. And more sleep. If that is the only thing I am crossing of my bucket list it’s a win.
It is nice to just be.
This morning I was thinking it’s Already Wednesday. I need a mother of this week – even though there are 5 more days ahead of me.
Tobia, give me an empty house and I’m happy! Usually I start with tidying. I just do… can’t help it. I arrange the space, then put a record on, and reorganize a closet or two lol Then by the afternoon, I will be tired so read/nap/watch a movie. Repeat the next day. Day trips- YES, New York City is not too far so a museum trip or a restaurant outing. Patio is also great. Just st and watch the birds, I love it.
Also “Mainly because I am really tired and spent. And at the same time my brain is making a huge list of things I want to do, should do, need to be done.” <— that's ME.
