It’s time to dive deep into my blog archive and a retrieve a treasure for you. And I found one. I had forgotten about this post. So it is truly a blog treasure, right?
Have you ever heard of World Baking Day? I apparently came across it in 2013. Everywhere in the blogosphere wonderful cake recipes popped up. Elaborate cake decorations and fancy ingredients. It was mesmerizing and at the same time I thought how many times did that fail.
And that got me starting on a whole new thought process about all the baking fails I have experienced. How often do we only show the glamorous parts – of life, achievements and places. Back in 2013 you hardly ever found anyone talking about this site. Or at least in my blog bubble that never occurred. I think these days we are talking more about the struggles and the failure online. Maybe it is because we are all older. Maybe we have been living with the internet longer. I am not sure.
Anyways, in this past blog post I share a few baking mishaps and tell you the story of my first ever cake I baked. I was so proud. We never ate it though. Oh and I do share photos of my mishaps.
I remember I felt really brave when hitting that publish button. It was definitely a step out of my comfort zone.
So enjoy.
What is your greatest baking failure? Ever used the wrong ingredient and didn’t know? What is your signature cake and how did you perfect it? Do you tend to use box mixes for your cakes to be safe?

I enjoyed that post, Tobia! Yes, let’s embrace our failed cakes! I don’t have a signature cake, as I don’t bake cakes often. I remember an epic fail from high school. I made a chocolate layer cake with chocolate frosting for my mom’s birthday. The cakes sank in the middle and fell apart, disintegrating into crumbs. The frosting wouldn’t spread over the crumbs, so I had to glop it on top in heaps. It really did look like a pile of poo! I was so embarrassed to serve it. But, it actually tasted good!
Well at least it tasted good and was edible. And I am sure your mom appreciated the gesture of the poo cake. The thought counts, right? Not sticking frosting. I’ve had that too.
Oh my goodness! Baking fails are fun to reflect on, but terrible in the moment.
My biggest baking fail in memory was the first and only time I tried to bake an apple pie. In retrospect, I think the shortening I used for the pie crust was rancid. Whatever it was, it tasted HORRIBLE. Never again!
Oh my gosh I can taste it on the tip of my tongue. Rancid shortening is a killing any cake.
I find Apple so hard to make. I think I’ve only tried it once. So much effort. But it does taste good – when there is no rancid stuff involved.
