When I started out this little series I didn’t check beforehand if I really did post cool stuff in the respective month. Well, it turned out that April is a month I rarely ever blog. Or at least nothing that has evergreen potential. I don’t need to share about books of March from back 6 years ago or so. That said I did find a blog treasure though from 2014.
My godchild celebrated her first birthday and I was going for a visit so I needed some sort of present. But honestly what does a one year old need? I had another first birthday coming up later that year for my other god child. Since they are so close I often try to find things I can give them both. Makes my life either.
After some back and forth I decided on doing a little birthday garland with the names one it. Good thing I keep recycling and saving things up. I used old jeans and scrap fabric here. I think I only bought the bunting. The letters are made of ribbon I sewed on.
The photos are not as great again. I truly have come a long way. and also garlands are forever difficult to photograph. I have yet to see a good picture of any garland that works well.
Do you have a go-to present for one year olds? Do you have godchildren? Do you like being an aunt? Do you know what you have gotten for your one year birthday?

What a wonderful, clever idea! I love buying baby clothes, so my gift for a 1 year old is usually an outfit and maybe a book. Not nearly as meaningful as your gift, for sure.
Books are always a good idea. But my godchildren get them always on Christmas so birthdays should be a bit more fun and different.
Outfits are my go-to for newborns.
Your garland is lovely, and what a thoughtful gift! I don’t have go-to gifts for one-year-olds. Luckily, the people I know aren’t shy about giving me ideas about what they might like or need, and I always appreciate that! I especially love it when they have a registry and I can choose a gift from their list.
Gifting something they need is always good. No brain hustles on your end AND they will enjoy the gift.
I have gifts for newborns (burp rags, rattle) and for their baptism (a book with their name on it). I do not know what I get for a 1 year-old. Probably just books and clothes. I am lame!
I do have a Godchild. He’s a teen now, though, and a little too cool for school. He’ll come around when he realizes I’m useful. :)
I am sure he will. Mine just turned 12 so we’ll see how the next phase will be.
Books is always a good option no matter the age.
A one year old does not need ANYTHING except time and love. I would give a trip to a museum or money for their college fund. Parents appreciate less clutter that comes with having kids.
True. They don’t NEED anything. I do give experiences when they are older because home d as pent together is more memorable than the next toy. But for a one year… no need to save gor volle here since it’s got free.
That’s a delightful and clever idea that I’m sure a young child will love as they grow up. Who wouldn’t love seeing their name up on a birthday banner?
Those were my thoughts. I know one of them has it hung up for the past decade.
Thanks for stopping by.
I love a nice banner – so sweeet and festive!
My go to present for a first birthday is usually clothes. I feel like I always got a lot of baby clothes the first few months, and then it really petered off by they time my kids were one. Or something for feeding like a water bottle or a fun plate or utensil set – I’m all about the practical presents at the first birthday. Because, really, I think it’s about the parents surviving their first year more than it is about the baby.
These are good insights. You are right I have seen that with my friends that they get new born clothes a lot but then it fizzles out. I usually gift clothes for 9 or 12 month as the newborn gift. Plates and utensils is also a really cool present. I need to keep that in mind. Maybe better than the banner which can only be used for special occasions. And you could probably paint the plate or something to make it more individual.
