I recently came across my blog friend Elisabeth who has a running list of top 5 and bottom 5 for all sorts of things. And the fruit edition really made me want to write my own post. So without further ado here is my fruity fruits top 5 bottom 5 edition.

My top five fruit picks

Blueberries
Always and forever. I have always loved them. It was a treat when my grandma opened a jar. And we always hoped she would be generous and open a second. We knew how much work went into one as we often enough went blueberry picking. My granddad even counted how many were in a jar. Now, I usually buy them. And if I can help it I have some in the fridge at all times. They are not only yummy but they also are supposed to help with Alzheimers. Well, count me in doing something for future me.

Apples
If I had to pick one fruit to eat for the rest of my life – god forbid – it would be apples. And preferably the Pink Ladies. I love their sweet crispness. They are perfect just as they are. They taste wonderful in my porridge. They work great with baking, even dried.

Watermelon
I love all kinds of melons but watermelon is by far the best. I love how versatile it is. Sweet and refreshing on a hot summers day. But paired with feta cheese and mint it’s instantly a tangy side salad for BBQing.

Oranges
When blueberries and watermelon are out of season I turn to oranges. There is nothing better than feeling unwell and biting into a piece of juicy orange. When I have a cold it is a common remedy. But I recently discovered that during migraines it is also rather wonderfully. And the smell when you peel it. I even preserved that smell when I made a garland to hang.

Avocado
Well yes. It is a fruit and so I have to list it here. I love it on bread, in salads and all things in-between. I even got two huge avocados as wedding present. At my husbands family home in the Domician Republic there is an avocado tree in the yard. I never managed to be there when it was in season (February) and so they brought some to the wedding. I wanted to grow a tree out of it and miserably failed. I have attempted many times since 2014 but it never gotten a sprout. Maybe the avocados you get in the stores here are dead inside…

My bottom five fruit picks

Lychee
Who likes lychees. Seriously? Peeled they look like naked mulls. And when you pop them in your mouth they feel like you eating mucus. Just arghhh.

Papaya
I don’t know why people care for papayas. To me they taste soapy. Even when really ripe they are just blah. No thank you.

Mango
Not as bad as papaya but more or less the same. Too soapy. Too blah. I eat it every ones in a while but I wouldn’t need to buy it. The husband bought two mangos lately and didn’t eat them. I had to do something with them and made mango ice cream. Well, it is sitting my freezer for weeks now even though I have been craving ice cream…

Apricots
What can I say… Not a fan. Again I do eat them but wouldn’t buy them and can easily pass on them. However I sometimes use dried ones in my homemade granola bars.

Raspberry
I know this one will shock you but I just don’t really care about raspberries. At least not fresh ones. I don’t buy them. I eat them when they are included somewhere though. And I do make a mean raspberry tiramisu that really doesn’t work with any other fruit. But I use frozen ones.

Your turn: Which fruit can’t you live without. Which one can you easily pass? Is there a fruit you have never eaten? What is the weirdest fruit you had in your life? Do you grow any fruit yourself?

Feel free to link your post if you also have a top 5 bottom 5 one out.

Oh, no raspberries. I love raspberries (admittedly not necessarily by themselves, but as a topping for oatmeal or in pancakes/desserts). I think my favorite go-to fruit would be apples (I am currently on a Granny Smith kick – because I love the crunchiness and tartiness paired with almond butter). I also love blueberries and strawberries and peaches.

There’s not too many fruits that I won’t eat at all, but I do not care for honeydew melons.

I agree. There are not many fruits I don’t eat and the bottom 5 was tough to come up with. I eat honey dew melons but only in combination with Serrano or Parma ham.

Wow, mangoes are at the bottom?? I love how they smell! I remember when we honeymooned in Grenada back in 2012, I would sit on the beach and gorge on mangoes LOL My top 5?… Bananas (convenience), apples, peaches, actually any stone fruit. Bottom?… I actually would eat anything, don’t really have strong feelings about any fruit that I just will not eat.

I would eat mostly any fruit. I only have strong feelings about lychee. The other ones are fine at times. But if I had to choose yes mangos are at the bottom.

Hmmm…I’m a berry and stone fruit lady. Give me the blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Give me the nectarines, cherries, and plums. I will take them all.

I don’t love apples. They’re too hard for me to eat with my bad teeth. I really dislike most tropical fruits, like bananas, mangoes, and pineapples.

I’m fascinated by the love of blueberries and dislike of raspberries, though. Do you not like the way raspberries taste or is it the sseds?

Good questions. I think it’s more the texture. They are so mushy and bland when fresh. The frozen ones are a bit better. I am rarely bothered by seeds. And year to all the stone fruits. Can’t go wrong with those.

That’s funny because mango is my son’s FAVORITE fruit! I like it too. Other than that I’ll agree with your top five. I think I would put strawberries in my bottom five, but that might be because the strawberries we get here just aren’t very good. Blueberries are delicious!

      Yeah we are fruit sisters.
I used to live strawberries and then one year I had allergies when I ate them. So now I rarely do.
      Blueberries are the best!

I’ve had mixed luck growing avocado plants. I’ve grown quite a few, but most of them die eventually. I have one in my yard though that is about 6 feet tall and does pretty well. I love it. It doesn’t grow fruit, though. I don’t know if that’s because it is too young, because the variety they grow for the grocery store won’t grow fruit, or because it doesn’t have an opposite sex tree to mate with around here. I’m trying to think of how old the tree is now, but I’m not sure. 10 maybe?

I don’t care for mangoes either, though my husband and daughter LOVE them. I love raspberries so much. And blueberries are great. When I lived in Alaska as a kid, we had the BEST blueberries. I haven’t really found any as good in California.

I hope Elisabeth is able to get her blog up and running again. :(

Yes I’ve heard that avocados need a long time until there are fruits.
I was wondering where Elisabeth was. I missed that info

Ooh, this is fun! I have very strong opinions about fruit, lol.

My top 5: watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, mango, and oranges
My bottom 5: blueberries, raspberries, apples, plums, and canteloupe

And yes, I realize that the fruits I dislike the most are the ones people like the most, haha. I have weird tastebuds when it comes to fruit!

Well we agree on watermelon and oranges. I do like pineapple but we don’t get very ripe ones here in Germany so they are always hurting in my mouth. But goods ones I am down. A shame you hate blueberries.

I’m not a big fan of mangoes either – they’re kinda slimy and I find the pulp gets stuck between my teeth.

Raspberries and apples are high on my list. Berries in general…because I find they tend to be less hit-and-miss in terms of quality.

Yes mangos have a soapy taste and feel to me. And definitely slimy when cutting.
I am not sure I agree with the less hit-and-miss for berries. I find the quality very flexible.
